🎤 About the Talk 關於講座
Potehi has travelled far beyond its origins, taking root in different communities across Peninsular Malaysia. While sharing a common heritage, each region has developed its own distinctive performance practices, repertoire, music and artistic identity.
In this talk, Prof. Dr. Tan Sooi Beng and Wong Soo Ling present a geographical and cultural mapping of Potehi in Peninsular Malaysia, highlighting where the tradition continues to survive today. Drawing from years of research and fieldwork, they will introduce the history, performance styles, stage settings, puppets, costumes, repertoire and musical traditions of active Potehi troupes from Penang, the northern states, Klang Valley and Johor. The session will also examine how different communities have adapted the art form over time, and discuss the opportunities and challenges for sustaining Potehi as a living cultural heritage in Malaysia.
