🎤 About the Talk
Before the age of modern entertainment, the streets of Penang were alive with the sounds of Lang Ding Tang (Moon Guitar). Combining folk singing, storytelling and fortune interpretation, this unique tradition once played an important role in community life, offering both entertainment and guidance to audiences from all walks of life.
In this talk, cultural researcher Lee Eng Kew introduces the history, performance practices and cultural significance of Lang Ding Tang, tracing its development in Penang and exploring the social role of performers who combined music with the interpretation of fortune lots. Through stories, recordings and historical materials, audiences will discover a fascinating chapter of Penang's disappearing folk culture.
