About

Welcome to "From Pantai Timur"—a curated screening block dedicated entirely to the creative heartbeat of Kuantan. Every single film in this lineup was either birthed by a filmmaker from Kuantan or shaped by core creative talent rooted right here. These aren't just regional stories; they are essential pieces of the Malaysian narrative that deserve to be seen.

Let's be real: this title is a promise. It’s called "From Pantai Timur" because this isn't a one-off pitstop for us. This showcase marks the first chapter of a long-term movement to continuously unearth, champion, and project East Coast stories to the rest of the nation.

If you care about the craft of storytelling, come slow down with us for some intentional watching. Support your local filmmakers, hang out for the "lepak" session after the films, and catch the first wave of a new regional cinema movement. The space is yours—let’s share it.

13/06/2026, 8pm - Feature Film

Year Without A Summer

Director: Tan Chui Mui

Azam comes back to his village to look for his childhood best friend, Ali. Ali and his wife Minah are overjoyed to meet this long lost friend, who had left the village thirty years ago. They had been following Azam’s news since he became a famous singer, although now Azam is over his peak. Ali and Minah invite Azam to their house. At night, Ali asks Azam to out fishing at the sea. They visit the Pulau Ular island. The whole night, the three of them talk about love, marriage, village folklore, mystic creatures, and the wild boar hunting once upon a time. As the night is ending, Minah demonstrates that she could hold her breath underwater for 3 minutes. Azam tries to do the same, but he never appears again...

14/06/2026, 5pm - Short Film Series

Short Film 1: Walinong Sari

Director: Eugene Foo

Synopsis:
Princess Walinong Sari was the finest warrior of her generation and heir to the Inderapura kingdom, which existed during the reign of Kesultanan Melaka. When she came of age, many suitors sought her hand in marriage, but she vowed to only marry one who could beat her in combat. None of them did of course, and Walinong Sari was content to remain single. Her father however, worrying for the future of Inderapura accepted a proposal from Melaka’s royal Bendahara much to the dismay of his daughter. Unhappy with her fate, she decided to travel to Pura on the mighty river one last time to say goodbye to the land she loved dearly.

Short Film 2 : All Who Leave Go There

Director: Ikram Haizammuri

Synopsis:
‘All Who Leave Go There’ is a 12-minute story that focuses on the lives of Malaysians in rural communities that live in government aided housing projects. The visually captivating story highlights the community’s limited exposure to the bustle of the big city, and how some struggle to adapt their perspectives and improve their living conditions, shown through the main character Ady and the friends he surrounds himself with.

Short Film 3 : Hometown

Director: Tan Chui Mui

Synopsis:
Personal memories of the director's fast-dwindling hometown of Kuantan, in a small fishing village called Sungai Ular.

Short Film 4: Sometimes Feels Like Summer

Director: Ikram Haizammuri

Synopsis:
Cigarettes and motorcycles have never been part of Alia's life, but for Jaie, those two things are part of his identity. Growing up in cramped, chaotic rural flat, Alia has always chosen the safety of her quiet and sheltered routine. When she turns to Jaie for help in winning over a motorcyclist from her neighbourhood, she steps into an unfamiliar space—one where smoke and speed define the rules.

What to Expect?

Can I expect to feel super inspired?
100% YES! You’ll be vibing to short films by young Malaysian filmmakers who didn't wait for permission or a big budget. These are the product of pure ingenuity—showing you exactly what can be achieved when you ditch the excuses and embrace the limits. You'll leave feeling like you need to go shoot something right now!

Can I actually talk to the filmmakers?
DUH, OF COURSE! After the screenings, we’re keeping it 100 with chill Q&A seshes. Ask them anything—especially how they pulled it off with zero budget and max creativity. It’s your chance to learn the true Malaysian hustle behind the scenes and vibe with the next big names in our cinema.

Will I meet other film nerds like me?
YASSS, QUEEN/KING! This is THE spot to link up with fellow film enthusiasts, industry OGs, and creators who stan storytelling as much as you do. Who knows? You might just find your next collab partner or ride-or-die creative buddy for your own Jerrr... project.

Is this event actually making a difference?
IT'S THE WHOLE POINT! By coming, you’re supporting a grassroots movement to uplift young Malaysian filmmakers and help build a resource hub for the future. We're not just screening films; we're building the infrastructure for the next generation. Let's make Malaysia proud on the global film stage!

This isn’t just another screening—it’s a space to connect, get inspired, and celebrate the genius of resourcefulness. So, let’s stop waiting for the perfect moment and start making magic! You in or what?
