Film Talk: The Island School (The Story of SJKC Aik Hua)

In Trong, Taiping, the population has been steadily declining. As a result, the only school on this “island-like” community, SJK(C) Aik Hua - now in its 86th year - faces the threat of closure due to its shrinking student population. Even more challenging, shortages of electricity, water, and other essential resources make daily life difficult for the residents on the island, as well as for the teachers and students.

In order to preserve the founding spirit of SJK(C) Aik Hua and to continue nurturing the next generation, the headmaster works tirelessly every year, hoping to enroll at least one new student to keep the school alive.

In year 2025, with the support of the Ministry of Education and several enterprises, the school made some progress. Assistance was provided to improve its living environment, including the installation of solar power at the teachers’ dormitory and repairs to damaged school facilities by Wei Dat Steel Wire Sdn Bhd, Sunterra Energy Sdn Bhd, and JJ-Lapp (M) Sdn Bhd.

Working quietly and without seeking attention, filmmakers Eunice Tan and Ansell Tan traveled to Trong to document and share the story of SJK(C) Aik Hua. In this film talk, the documentary <A Small School Under the Sun> will be screened, followed by a sharing session with the filmmakers about their creative process as observers. Teachers and students from SJK(C) Aik Hua will also be invited to share their experiences and stories.
