About
Rolling the end credits roll finish and walk off is never a thing in HYF. “Lepak” after screening is always our thing to connect with audiences and friends, always sharing and caring. We have been playing around with fictions for previous episodes. But now, we are diving into the to the ground to earth stories which is close to us. We would love to create and make space for short documentary to the community to understand, realate and connect.
Let’s be real: these aren't some "secret" underground films. They’ve already made waves and touched a lot of people in the scene. They prove that Malaysians actually do give a damn about what's happening around us. We’re bringing these three acclaimed non-fiction shorts back to the big screen—not because people forgot about them, but because they are essential viewing.
If you’ve been to our previous fiction screenings, you know we’re all about the craft. This time, we’re inviting you to slow down a bit for some "intentional watching." If you care about the craft, we’re more than happy to share the space with you.
The Lineup
Swimming in the Mine Pit Lake "Guests come to see Daddy, Daddy isn't home." A raw look at 1980s Perak. When the tin mines dried up, many fathers had to "jump off the plane" to find work overseas. It’s about the families left behind and that "blank memory" that still haunts them today.

Long Moh Deep in Sarawak’s Upper Baram, the Kenyah community is caught in that tricky balance: trying to hold onto their ancestors' roots while the modern world keeps pushing in. It’s a quiet, powerful look at what it means to stay grounded.
Beats of Fire A tribute to the Urumi Melam and the people sweating to keep it alive. This isn't just about music; it’s about identity and the unsung heroes making sure the heartbeat of Indian tradition in Malaysia doesn't stop.

What to Expect?
Can I expect to feel super inspired?
100% YES! You’ll be vibing to short films by young Malaysian filmmakers who didn't wait for permission or a big budget. These are the product of pure ingenuity—showing you exactly what can be achieved when you ditch the excuses and embrace the limits. You'll leave feeling like you need to go shoot something right now!
Can I actually talk to the filmmakers?
DUH, OF COURSE! After the screenings, we’re keeping it 100 with chill Q&A seshes. Ask them anything—especially how they pulled it off with zero budget and max creativity. It’s your chance to learn the true Malaysian hustle behind the scenes and vibe with the next big names in our cinema.
Will I meet other film nerds like me?
YASSS, QUEEN/KING! This is THE spot to link up with fellow film enthusiasts, industry OGs, and creators who stan storytelling as much as you do. Who knows? You might just find your next collab partner or ride-or-die creative buddy for your own Jerrr... project.
Is this event actually making a difference?
IT'S THE WHOLE POINT! By coming, you’re supporting a grassroots movement to uplift young Malaysian filmmakers and help build a resource hub for the future. We're not just screening films; we're building the infrastructure for the next generation. Let's make Malaysia proud on the global film stage!
This isn’t just another screening—it’s a space to connect, get inspired, and celebrate the genius of resourcefulness. So, let’s stop waiting for the perfect moment and start making magic! You in or what?
