About
This interactive workshop offers musicians a practical introduction to the fundamentals of orchestral conducting. Participants will explore basic technique—stance, breath, baton use, and beat patterns—and apply these skills in real time with two pianists. The session emphasizes clarity, communication, and the relationship between gesture and sound, with opportunities for participants to gain hands-on experience at the podium. More advanced participants will have additional time for focused work, allowing for deeper exploration of control, clarity, and musical intent.
Schedule:
Hour 1: Why the conductor; fundamentals of technique (stance, breath, baton, basic patterns, cutoffs)
Hour 2: Application with two pianos (short excerpts, hands-on conducting)
Hour 3: Advanced participants (extended podium time and focused work)
- Repertoire will include the opening sections from:
- Mozart: Don Giovanni Overture
- Beethoven: Coriolan Overture
- Beethoven Symphony No. 1
- Beethoven Symphony No. 4
- Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture
Join us for this highly interactive session combining demonstration, guided instruction, and hands-on podium experience with two professional pianists.
