About
A Song of Crossing to the Southern Sea draws inspiration from the history of Chinese migration to Nanyang. Through puppetry, narrative singing, live music, and theatrical storytelling, the performance reimagines memories carried across the sea.
Beginning with personal stories of departure, the work weaves together family, faith, and a longing for home — guiding audiences on a journey shaped by leaving, waiting, and belonging.
The 2026 Penang Edition builds upon the original 2024 Taichung production, reuniting with long-time collaborator Smile Narration Singing Group (Taiwan). Classic moments return, reinterpreted through Penang’s local cultural landscape, offering a renewed cross-border dialogue on migration and memory.
