Synopsis
MSFF is the first ever virtual Malaysian Student Film Festival scheduled for a livestream showcase in June 2021. For the past years, many Malaysian student societies in universities all over the UK (and Ireland) have participated in Malaysian Night, a theatrical production celebrating traditional cultural art forms such as dance and music. This year, students will have the chance to showcase 15 - 40 minute films in our virtual event. Varying awards judged by external experts in the film and theatre industry will be celebrated on the last day of the festival. It is MSFF’s hope to not only give students a chance to translate traditional MNights into a different medium, but also to let these films be a portfolio of well-made student films relating to Malaysian culture.

Summer in Spring
by University College London Malaysian Society
Genre: Comedy
Logline: The team behind the Malam Kita production at Universiti Kolej Landen hallucinates a parallel universe where their production can actually take place.
Each year, the Universiti Kolej Landen Malaysian Society (UKL MSoc) puts on a show called “Malam Kita”... Not this year.
In the midst of a global pandemic, a team of four: Syahira, Jade, Hudson and Shazwan struggle to cultivate an environment of camaraderie among the new UKL MSoc members through the Malam Kita project. The story also follows the UKL MSoc president, PG, who struggles to run the association when nothing is going right. Follow their journey where rivals from Raja Kolej Landen (RKL) loom nearby and the UKL Students’ Union plays mind games with societies. Along the way, our protagonists find themselves interacting with student organisations such as UK Easy and Jamcorp- to name a few.
Summer in Spring reveals the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the deep-rooted culture that Malaysian university students in the UK have built over the decades.
In a world of kiasu CV chasers and confused freshers- will our Malam Kita team find their direction?

Sarawak Laksa
by University of Kent Malaysian Society
Genre: Documentary
Logline: “Sarawak Laksa” is a personal love letter to my hometown, Kuching, and a homage to our favourite food, Sarawak Laksa. Exploring the well-known taste of the cuisine and its seemingly unknown recipe closely guarded by its gatekeepers.
A taste of Sarawak through the lens of a camera and the eyes of the locals. Sarawak Laksa is the pride of Sarawak gastronomy as the highly secretive recipe is said to encompass at least 20 types of spices and many years of experience for the right proportion. Home replication is almost impossible so people resort to participate in the deeply-rooted coffee shop culture for a taste of home. To the vendors, the bowl cradles their labour of love but to the coffee shop patrons, it is the familiar spoonful of comfort that they look for.

Thousand Sterling Shark
by Cambridge University Malaysia Society
Genre: Comedic parody
Logline: A young student gets sucked into a world of wild parties and dodgy business dealings when the President of his university’s MSoc starts embezzling society funds to win back his girlfriend with expensive handbags.
Narik’s girlfriend Rosemarie has just broken up with him… he’s too broke to buy her expensive handbags and she’s just not having it. But neither is Narik. He’s the President of Horton Business School Malaysian Society, and he’ll do anything in his power to get her back… even if that means embezzling society money. With the help of his cronies, Thomas and Reza, and their mysteriously wealthy friend Jing, they strike a deal with a dodgy company which gets them sucked into a world of shady business dealings, superyachts and epic parties. Their fellow committee member Madeline is becoming increasingly suspicious and Thomas is starting to have doubts… but at least Narik can buy Rosemarie the most extravagant bags on the high street. What could go wrong?
