About

The Flowers are Silently Witnessing

Theo Panagopoulos’s The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing (2024) exposes how colonial power relies on pastoral imagery to obscure violence.

Using archival footage of wildflowers in Palestine filmed by Scottish missionaries in the 1930s and 40s, he reveals how beauty was used to mask British occupation.

Through re-editing and layered text, he reclaims these images as testimony and a form of resistance to cultural erasure. His interventions disrupt the settler gaze, transforming the pastoral into a site of critique.

Arna’s Children

A powerful and deeply moving documentary that follows the lives of children from Jenin Refugee Camp in Palestine. Starting from a theatre project during the First Intifada, the film revisits these children years later, revealing how their lives were shaped by conflict, loss, and growing up under occupation.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion on cultural resistance in the Palestinian context.

Cultural resistance is about using art, storytelling, theatre and creative expression to hold on to identity, share stories and challenge what is often erased or unheard. In Palestine, culture becomes a way to survive, remember and speak.

Through different forms of art, Palestinians continue to share their realities and keep their stories alive.

Speakers:
Ahmed Tobasi (Online) – Theatre director and actor from Jenin Refugee Camp
Puan Sri Normah Hashim – Hashim Sani Centre for Palestine Studies (UM)

The Flowers are Silently Witnessing

Selepas tayangan filem, terdapat perbincangan tentang penentangan budaya mengikut konteks Palestin.

Puan Sri Normah Hashim – Pusat Hashim Sani Bagi Pengajian Palestin (HSCPS), Universiti Malaya
