About

The Faculty of Music at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) proudly present the 16th UiTM-klpac Malaysian Composers Concert Series 2025. This annual concert series celebrates the creation and performance of new music, featuring a unique theme each year. Now in its 16th year, the series takes place at klpac’s Pentas 2 and has showcased a wealth of new compositions by UiTM students and faculty, as well as works by local composers beyond UiTM, alongside international guests from countries such as Australia, Indonesia, Germany, the United States, Norway, Cambodia, the UK and more.

The mission of this concert series is to spotlight a diverse range of musical genres that rarely find a platform in Malaysia – from art music and contemporary classical to contemporary traditional and electronic music. Over the years, the series has presented an array of musical performances with varying instrumentation, including orchestra, choir, string quartet, piano trio, percussion ensemble, traditional ensemble and more. Each concert brings together UiTM’s emerging talents (students and staff) and professional musicians from Malaysia and abroad, fostering a rich exchange of artistry and innovation.

This year’s series features four concerts, each with its own theme:

SHOW 1 – NIGHT MUSIC: New Music for Violin and Piano from Ireland & Malaysia
Performed by Darragh Morgan (violin) and Mary Dullea (piano)
Date & Time: 17 Nov 2025 (Mon) @ 8.30pm
Two of Ireland’s most pioneering artists Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea, who share a fearless and iconoclastic pursuit of new sonorities, invite the klpac audience on a musical journey to expand our aural landscape. Musical language is unique in each culture. Celebrating the 90th year of revered minimalist composer Arvo Pärt with his most iconic work Fratres, bookended by commemorating the 2022 passing of sonic inventor George Crumb and with wonderful new works by composers from Malaysia, Tazul Tajuddin, Yii Kah Hoe plus celebrated composers from Ireland, Gerald Barry, Raymond Deane and Deirdre McKay we show how music really is the world’s global language.
“Morgan and Dullea’s performance, needless to say, was superb” –Journal of Music
''The intuitive partnership of Morgan and Dullea resulted in an utterly gripping sound-world of breath-taking delicacy and serenity” –The Irish Times

SHOW 2 – THE COLOURS OF MALAYSIA
Performed by See Yee Wong (piano)
Date & Time: 18 Nov 2025 (Tue) @ 8.30pm
“The Colours of Malaysia” is a piano recital that features contemporary piano solo works by Malaysian composers, offering a vibrant spectrum of sounds, emotions, and narratives inspired by the nation’s multicultural heritage and unique soundscape. This recital not only highlights the creativity and diversity of Malaysian music but also invites listeners to experience and explore how identity, culture, tradition, religion, and modernity are presented in the compositions of our local composers.

SHOW 3 – A JOYFUL JOURNEY: Solo Piano Recital
Performed by Dr. Vikki Chen (piano)
Date & Time: 19 Nov 2025 (Wed) @ 8.30pm
“A Joyful Journey” is a piano recital that traces a musical voyage across contrasting eras and styles and shows the piano’s expressive and technical range. The programme includes:
●      Ravel’s Miroirs is an iconic five-movement suite that showcases the diversity of styles and imagination of Ravel in pieces that depict the night moth, sad birds, boat in the ocean, valley of bells and the Spanish-inspired Alborada del gracioso.
●      Tajuddin’s L’Etudes I & II are pieces that showcase the wide dynamic and expressive range of the piano.
●      Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy is a tale of a traveler’s journey to distant oceans to discover one’s meaning and purpose in life and to reflect on the joys, challenges, triumphs and all the intangible wonders of our human journey.

WORKSHOP - YUMCHA Building Acoustics
Date & Time: 22 Nov 2025 (Sat) @ 10am - 5pm (with one-hour break)
Step into the world of sound and architecture with YUMCHA: Building Acoustics, an interactive workshop exploring how spaces shape what we hear. Participants will learn the fundamentals of acoustic design, sound measurement, and spatial listening through hands-on demonstrations and creative listening exercises. Whether you’re an architect, musician, or sound enthusiast, this session offers a rare opportunity to experience how materials, form, and resonance influence our perception of space. Join us for an inspiring afternoon of sound, structure, and discovery — and of course, some yum cha conversations to follow!

SHOW 4 – SPECTRA 2025: Sonic Garden
Date & Time: 22 Nov 2025 (Sat) @ 8.30pm
Step into Sonic Garden, an immersive celebration of sound, space, and imagination. This year, SPECTRA invites you to wander through a living landscape of sonic textures and visual rhythms, where each performance blooms like a new species of sound. Following last year’s exploration of SynThe esthesia, where colors and music intertwined, Sonic Garden expands that sensory dialogue into a lush ecosystem of electroacoustic expression. Three ensembles — SPECTRA Collective, MDW Electroacoustic Music Ensemble (University of Music & Performing Arts Vienna), and Modular Malaya — cultivate their own musical flora, intertwining live electronics, modular synthesis, and multimedia projections. From delicate sonic petals to deep, resonant roots, each piece transforms the stage into an evolving habitat of light and sound. Visual projections will respond organically to the music, creating a fertile interplay between nature, technology, and human creativity. Come experience how sound can grow, breathe, and transform — in Sonic Garden, every vibration is alive.
