About the Formosa Indigenous Song & Dance Troupe (FISDT)
In the face of rapid social transformations, numerous Indigenous tribes maintain a dignified and humble stewardship of their traditional rituals. These invaluable cultural assets serve as a vital source of empowerment and pride for young Indigenous people.

The Formosa Indigenous Song & Dance Troupe (FISDT), made up of a group of young indigenous, has revived and reconstructed their gradually disappearing songs and dances with the help of anthropologists and tribal elders, often through actual on-site participation and observation. These songs and dances—passed down orally by the elders—have been performed onstage to reassert the original spirit of the indigenous rituals. The vitality of the group’s outstanding performances helps further understanding of indigenous culture while enriching and extending the range of theatrical experience.

Since its founding in 1991, the troupe has traveled widely, giving hundreds of performances across Taiwan and sharing its work with audiences in Europe, the United States, and across Asia.

After fifteen years in Taipei, FISDT moved to Hualien County in 2007—Taiwan’s most populous region for Indigenous communities. This move marked a conscious return to ancestral lands, aimed at reconnecting with tribal roots and opening a new phase of artistic exploration. Through this "repositioning," the troupe redefines its path, seeking to rediscover the raw energy and soul of traditional Indigenous performance.

By immersing itself in tribal life, FISDT reclaims a way of seeing rooted in Indigenous communal experience, viewing the world through “tribal eyes.”
