Rashomon Synopsis

The story is adapted from the great writer Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s “Yabu no Naka” (In a Grove). It narrates the story of a samurai passing through the bamboo forest with his wife, where they meet the bandit Tajōmaru. The wife is then bullied by the bandit, and the samurai is later found dead in the bamboo forest. However, the versions told by the three parties involved (the samurai’s dead spirit tells the process through theshrine maiden) and the witness are contradictory.

Like a puzzle, this show creates a journey in search of the truth. Yet, the truth…

Japan’s acclaimed director Akira Kurosawa once adapted “Yabu no Naka” into a movie in 1950. He used Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s other novel “Rashomon” as the name of the movie, which has since then made “Rashomon” a term for situations where different people offer conflicting narratives, making the truth difficult to discern.

Fay Theatre Background
Founded in 2002 by Eva Heng and Yves Yap Wai Cheong, both graduates of the Drama and Cinema Department at Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, Fay Theatreis an independent Malaysian theatre company dedicated to creating works beyond mainstream theatrical conventions. Its debut production, A Funeral for the Stranger, established the company’s commitment to experimental and image-driven storytelling. After gaining early recognition through performances such as Flora Ocean at the 7th HuaZong Literature Awards, the company entered a period of dormancy in 2005. Fay Theatre returned in 2011 with After Sunset Before Sunrise, followed by a full revivalin 2018 with The White Raven, reaffirming its distinctive artistic vision centred on imagery, symbolism, and innovative performance techniques.

Despite disruptions caused by the pandemic, Fay Theatre continued to grow by launching its annual actor training programme in 2021, nurturing a new generation of theatre practitioners through an intensive 150-hour curriculum. In 2022, the production toured 24 Chinese primary schools in southern Johor with the educational production Awas! Jangan Tertipu, using theatre to promote online safety and arts appreciation.

Recent productions, including Room I, Room II, Rain, and The Cat Office, have showcased both emerging talents and the company's evolving ensemble-based performance methodology. Rain and The Cat Office were nominated for Best Ensemble at the Boh Cameronian Arts Awards in 2024 and 2025. For over two decades, Fay Theatre has remained committed to bold artistic exploration, cultivating original works that celebrate the director's unique vision while continually redefining contemporary Malaysian theatre beyond the mainstream.

羅生門故事大綱

故事改編自日本大文豪芥川龍之介的《藪の中》，敘述武士帶著妻子途經竹林中，遇見強盜多襄丸，妻子遭強盜欺凌，後武士陳屍於竹林中。然而三個當事人（武士亡魂經由女巫之口說出其過程），以及目擊者所說的版本，卻莫衷一是。

像拼圖遊戲似的，這部劇成了一趟尋找真相的旅程，然而，真相……

日本知名導演黑澤明曾於 1950 年，將《藪の中》改編拍成電影，並借用芥川龍之介的另一篇小說《羅生門》作為片名，從此「羅生門」成了「各說各話」、「真相難辨」的代名詞。

劇團簡介
非劇坊創立於 2002 年，由畢業於台灣中國文化大學戲劇與影像系的王文真、葉偉章共同創辦，以「非主流、非傳統、不受形式拘束」為創作理念。2003 年憑《花海》於《花踪》文學獎演出廣受好評；2005 年劇團進入沉寂。2011 年以《天黑以後，天亮以前》重返舞台，2018 年正式重整再出發，推出《時間·遠方·白烏鴉》，持續探索意象劇場與獨特表演美學。2021 年起開辦年度演員訓練工作坊，培育新生代劇場人才，並逐步發展出「能量場域」表演方法。2022 年以《小心！別上當》展開柔南 24 所華小公益巡演，推廣戲劇教育。近年推出《房間一》《房間二》《雨》及《貓の事務所》等作品，其中《雨》與《貓の事務所》連續入圍 2024、2025 年 Boh Cameronian Arts Award「最佳群演」。創團二十餘年，非劇坊始終堅持鮮明的導演風格與原創精神，持續開拓主流之外的劇場風景。
