About
[Irei no Hi Special] Documentary Screening: 『勝ちゃんー沖縄の戦後』(Kacchan - Okinawa's Post-war) (2024)
"Kacchan," formally known as Yamashiro Yoshikatsu, is a fisherman from Kunigami in northern Okinawa. Directors Asako Kageyama (影山あさ子) and Yukihisa Fujimoto (藤本幸久) have followed him for over 20 years, documenting the life of a man they describe as the "finest fisherman" they have ever encountered. And one could even say, Kacchan’s life is a living archive of the Okinawan people’s post-war history.
Having survived the Battle of Okinawa as an infant, Kacchan belongs to a generation known locally as "Kampo nu kue nokusa"—the leftovers of the naval shells. And in the scorched landscape of post-war Okinawa, where land and farms were seized for U.S. military bases, the sea became the only source of life. Kacchan’s personal experiences reflect the turbulent history of the island, from the "Yumiko-chan incident"(1) and the Miyamori Elementary School plane crash(2) under U.S. occupation to the Koza Riot(3) and the ongoing struggle in Henoko(4).
Footnote:
- (1) Yumiko-chan Incident (1955): The kidnap, rape, and murder of a 6-year-old girl by a U.S. soldier in Kadena. This event ignited the "Islander's Struggle," a massive movement for land rights and an end to military crimes.
- (2) Miyamori Elementary School Plane Crash (1959): A U.S. jet fighter crashed into the school in Ishikawa City, killing 17 people (mostly children) and injuring over 200, highlighting the dangers of living alongside airbases.
- (3) Koza Riot (1970): A spontaneous anti-U.S. military uprising in Koza (now Okinawa City) sparked by a traffic accident, where thousands of residents burned dozens of U.S. military vehicles in protest of the occupation.
- (4) Henoko Struggle: A decades-long civil resistance movement against the relocation of a U.S. Marine base to the ecologically sensitive Oura Bay in Henoko, Nago City.
