About

*"The Sound of Where I Come From"*[A Hin Residency presentation by Ryo Kobayashi]
Coming from Japan, and perceiving George Town through an Kurban Japanese body, I find it quite fascinating how in various corners of the city, where people(what demographic?) relax at public area while playing music, watching news, doing live streams, or making calls directly through their smartphone speakers.
Unfamiliar mother tongues that I can't even recognize, sources of sound I can't allocate, and overlapping acoustic layers forming a soundscape so diverse that a foreign(East Asian) body like mine feels compelled to attune to all of it. Those sounds that were released into air in varying waves and frequencies, creating a kind of “sound bubble” around the body, that constantly interacting, negotiating, overlapping, and asserting a presence within the surrounding.
In this "audio-walk"-ish workshop, presented as part of my residency, participants are invited to experience these soundscapes from my perspective, like an invitation to observe my observation. We will walk through the cityscapes of George Town, carrying our smartphones, each playing audio(with provided instructions) in our own native language directly from our speakers, without earphones.
Between private bubbles and public presence, we search through our bodies for the right volume, negotiating sound, space, and existence with O/others.
