About
Reading Night|A Guided Reading of the Research Bibliography
How can we move away from the grand historical narratives and move closer to the individual, the silence, the everyday?
Let’s not think of this Reading Night as a formal lecture, instead, it’s an intimate, vocalized understanding of the Okinawan experience. We invite you to listen to three distinct voices in Japanese, Mandarin, and English as we peel back the layers of identity, trauma, and resilience that define the island beyond the geopolitical frame.
Bring a piece of “your” Okinawa! This is a night for genuine exchange. We encourage you to bring along your own books, objects, or film references related to your own understanding of Okinawa. Let’s turn Hin Bus Depot into a space for communal storytelling.
All Japanese and Mandarin excerpts will be provided with English and Mandarin translations to ensure an inclusive dialogue.
PS: We are here to talk about the real Okinawa in depth, one that lived by real people in the shadows of real history. As a Penangite, we know the difference between a tourist's postcard and a resident's reality, just as we wouldn't want to hear a tourist tell us where the best "sightseeing spots" in Penang are, we are here to honor the depth of the Okinawan everyday, not it as a "beach paradise" or a holiday destination.
