All day international producers meeting - Programme line-up
Bringing together government and cultural agendas with needs of the artistic community
Time: 10:00AM - 11:00AM
This discussion will present two perspectives on spearheading ambitious cultural activity and finding alignment with government agendas in the domestic and international spheres. Kate Ben-Tovim will share findings from her recent Churchill Fellowship which investigated international best practice in cultural diplomacy and soft power. Michelle Rocha will offer insights from her role as Head of Touring for Factory International UK that operates Manchester International Festival and Avivia Studios.
Facilitating and platforming the work of Indigenous artists
Time: 11:15AM - 12:30PM
This discussion centres around the challenges in defining, promoting and nurturing Indigenous voices and artwork, under the increasing pressure of urban development and globalisation. Independent First Nations arts leader Ping Flynn (based in Melbourne) will present the work of developing First People theatre's and performing arts in Australia while we listen to insights from Wen-Di Sia, co-founder of Gerimis Art and Maznah Unyan, master weaver from the Mah Meri tribe.
Being an Independent Producer - Apa bezanya?
Time: 1:45PM - 3:00PM
This exchange examines the challenges and benefits of being an independent producer in Malaysia, Australia and Japan. The Malaysian experience will be from the perspective of KL-based producer (Sharifah Al-Leysha) while the Australian perspective is from independent producer (Freya Waterson) working nationally and also internationally. From Japan we will hear the perspective of an independent producer based in Osaka (Kensuke Seto Cameron). The discussion seeks to open the floor for ways of improving working methods, and to discover new ideas and strategies, from hearing different perspectives.
How do we navigate collaboration in an open diverse world today?
Time: 3:15PM - 4:45PM
Collaboration is often the go-to term used in many proposals and projects. However, navigating it is often fraught with unseen and unknown scenarios stemming from cultural, creative and economic differences. How can contemporary producers and curators understand these differences and find ways to work with them? This panel will bring together producers/ curators who have worked cross-culturally to share their experience and strategies, including Tam Nguyen and Tamara Saulwick (Australia) in conversation with June Tan (Malaysia) and Rebecca Kezia (Indonesia).
