About
Masterclass Silat by Nur Faliza Saad
Silat is a martial art that embodies the art of warfare and self-defence practices of the Malay communities in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, it is known as Pencak Silat, and both traditions have been recognized by UNESCO as shared cultural heritage of Malaysia and Indonesia.
Several key components exist within Silat, including Bunga, Jurus, Belebat, Tapak, Buah, Tempur Seni, and Tempur Bela Diri, each comprising distinct elements such as steps (langkah), stances (kuda-kuda), hand movements (pelampas tangan), and leg movements (pelampas kaki). The methods of combat are generally divided into two categories — armed and unarmed techniques.
By learning Silat, one not only acquires effective self-defence skills, but also helps to preserve a valuable cultural heritage while fostering a spirit of perseverance, courage, and national pride.
