About

Presented by The Actors Studio Foundation and The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat as part of klpac’s 20th anniversary highlight, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me returns for its third staging in Malaysia with the support of The Embassy of Ireland in Malaysia and The Australian High Commission Malaysia.

This masterpiece by one of Ireland’s most respected playwrights, Frank McGuinness, was performed in the West End and then on Broadway for over a year where it was named Best Foreign Play (New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award).

Three men – an American doctor, an Irish journalist and an English academic - are abducted and held in a windowless cell. With absolutely no contact with the outside world and an uncertain fate, they fight boredom by breaking out into song and laughter, pretend they’re in a flying car and do just about anything to stay sane.

The riveting play is based on the real-life abduction of Irishman, Brian Keenan. Keenan went on to recount his horrific four-and-a-half year ordeal alongside British journalist, John McCarthy, in an autobiographical book, An Evil Cradling (Winner, Irish Times Literary Prize) which was later made into a film.

The Actors Studio’s re-staging is a truly international collaboration featuring Charles Donnelly from the UK, Kingsley Judd from Australia and Gavin Yap from Malaysia – under the direction of Joe Hasham OAM.

Don’t miss one of the most startling pieces of theatre you will ever see! The Actors Studio’s past 2011 and 2012 staging of this play in KL, Penang and Singapore received rave reviews and played to full houses.

Advisory: The show contains mature content. Haze effects will be used during the performance.
Edu Institutes Group Bookings: Post-show talk with cast / creative team can be scheduled.

About The Actors Studio Foundation
As a pioneer in the performing arts industry in Malaysia with more than three decades worth of experience, The Actors Studio has created a large body of creative work, produced countless talents, and brought much positive change as well as advancement to the industry since its inception.

To ensure the continuity of its good work as well as to secure the legacy of The Actors Studio, The Actors Studio Foundation was established on 16 December 2021 to carry on its Co-Founder’s vision in the long-term.

The Foundation’s objectives are very much in keeping with the initial mission of The Actors Studio. This includes providing safe creative spaces for artistic activities, be it live performances, arts programmes or arts training, to thrive and flourish. The Foundation also seeks to ensure the sustainability of the industry by nurturing new talent through training and education. This also includes financially supporting students who could otherwise not afford it in their performing arts education through the provision of scholarship and bursaries. It will continue to present and produce quality Malaysian works with a strong local voice in various genres for the public and work towards bringing the magic of the arts to the underprivileged.

About TAS Seni Teater Rakyat
Since its inception in 1989, The Actors Studio has been presenting groundbreaking theatre in Malaysia. In 2006, it created The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat arm to bridge the gap between the arts and the people in line with the National Arts and Culture Department’s efforts to ‘merakyatkan seni’.

The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat’s inaugural project was Alfian Sa’at’s “Anak Bulan di Kampong Wa’ Hassan” which toured to five villages in Peninsular Malaysia. Since then, it has re- staged many classics such as “Philadelphia, Here I Come!”, “Uda dan Dara” and “Rashomon”. It has also revived interest in traditional art forms through productions like “A Night of Cantonese Opera” and “Mak Yong Titis Sakti”.

The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat has also been a key driver behind the development of new content. It has premiered works such as “The Taste of Water”, “Kandang” (based on George Orwell’s Animal Farm), a BM version of Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal” and “Dato’ Seri” (based on Macbeth). In addition to on-going series like “Don’t Let...” and “Dancebox” to promote new content, it also initiated The New Play Project for emerging playwrights.

In 2016, it mounted a year-long Shakespeare 400 season. Two productions “Shakespeare Goes Bollywood” and “Richard III” was named the “Best of 2016” by the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards. Richard III won 6 other awards. The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat continues to bring quality and accessible theatre with a strongly Malaysian voice. The Actors Studio just celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019.
