James Kan was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His first encounter with dance was at the age of 21 during a training program led by Youth Dance Malaysia. In 2020, he graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts under the “2017 Taiwan Scholarship", Master of Fine Arts in Dance Choreography.
He has been invited to perform at some international dance festivals, such as: Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, London, Hong Kong, Australia, China, Seoul, Myanmar, Japan.
His work <Utopia> garnered the Merit Award in the “2011 Taiwan Creative Dance Competition” and “The Best Choreographer in a Mixed Bill” at the Malaysia 2014 BOH Cameronian Awards, while <Dreams> won the Gold Medal in the “2012 Taiwan Creative Dance Competition”. <The Lost Box> was the finalist choreographer in a Mentor-mentee dance choreography competition — “Dance Escalator” organised by MyDance Alliance, Malaysia.
In 2013, James Kan premiered his 70mins full-length solo performance, entitled <Fragment> to which he was nominated “Best Dancer” for the Malaysia 2014 BOH Cameronian Awards.
