Pulse and Voices of Penang is a musical offering presented by Penang Unity Vocal Ensemble and Culture Shot as part of the Penang Heritage Arts Festival. Through ensemble items, solo performances, and cultural presentation, the programme reflects aspects of Penang’s cultural diversity, shared memories, and lived experience.Rather than seeking to tell the whole story of the island, the event offers a modest reflection on some of the sounds, traditions, and expressions that continue to resonate within Penang’s multicultural life. The programme culminates in the world premiere of A Song of Pulau Pinang, the opening movement of a newly conceived composition suite inspired by the island’s journey from natural beginnings to its multicultural present.Pulse and Voices of Penang is offered in appreciation of the island’s living heritage and as a simple tribute to the communities, memories, and cultural connections that continue to shape its spirit.

Deborah Elizabeth Martin is an active music educator and budding composer in Penang. She received her B.A. in Music from Southwestern College, Kansas, USA. Her musical journey began at the piano but has expanded since then. Since young, she has been passionate about choral music and has been consistently involved with choir. Under her tutelage, she has led high school choirs to competitions and returned with outstanding results. Over the years, she has also taught private music lessons and conducted choirs. Currently, she teaches middle school band at Dalat International School. Apart from teaching, she remains an active chorister and actively performs with The Messengers Choir and her local church choir. During the pandemic in 2020 when live music performances were restricted and virtual performances took flight, she started composing and arranging music for choirs. Her first composition, Pulihkan Bumi Kita was a collaboration with Puan Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab, director from the Department of Environment (DOE) and Madam Khoo Hooi Lay, conductor of The Messengers Choir. The piece was later released by the DOE in honor of Earth Day 2021. The lyrics of the song were first penned by Puan Sharifah and later set to music by Martin. They continued to work together and later produced the song Suria Malaysia, released by the DOE in lieu of World Ozone Day 2025. Her most current work, A Song of Pulau Pinang, is a choral suite, written in collaboration with director of the Penang Music and Drama Players, Jayaram Menon. This piece of music is a work in progress. The first movement is scheduled to be premiered at the Penang Heritage Arts Festival (PHAF) 2026.

Deborah Elizabeth Martin

Cassandra Tan is a Penang-based performer working across theatre, choral music, improv, and stand-up comedy.

She is a chorister with Penang Philharmonic Chorus and Penang Philharmonic Chamber Choir, primarily performing in Penang. The choir was awarded Silver in the All-Female category at the MCE International Choir Festival.

Her repertoire spans works across multiple languages and traditions, including European and Southeast Asian repertoire, with pieces in Swahili, Malay, and German. She has collaborated with singers from Kuala Lumpur in performances across Penang and KL.

Her theatre work includes musical theatre and traditional Malay forms such as Boria and Jikey, where improvisation, music, movement, and humor intersect. She performed in the musical Vikings in a featured ensemble role combining acting, singing, and movement. She has also taken on a lead role in a two-person play, and has additional training in acting and contemporary dance, alongside experience in social dance styles such as bachata, salsa, and West Coast Swing.

She has performed in stand-up and improv shows with Penang Comedy, and continues to explore humor and storytelling through her writing and performance work.

Her work explores the balance between structure and spontaneity, where storytelling, music, and humor meet.
