About

In English, it's challenging to translate "不(bu)櫛(Zhi)進士(JinShi)," but the closest approximation might be "The Scholars." The establishment of this group was prompted by a national competition, and all these dancers had at least five years of dance training prior. In ancient times, "不櫛進士" described capable and talented women. "櫛(Zhi)" refers to an ancient hair comb, also symbolizing hair restraint, while "進士((JinShi)" refers to successful candidates in the imperial examination system of ancient China. In my view, "不櫛進士" might have had a derogatory connotation for women in ancient times, but in the modern era, with the improved status of women in civilized societies, it has come to be seen as a commendable term. Regardless of positive or negative connotations, "不櫛進士" describes women who are both talented and unbound, embodying courage and intelligence.

These dancers are not well-known, but each excels in their respective fields. Transforming into dancers, they bring forth "不櫛進士," delivering a performance that challenges preconceptions with real stories. Without revealing too much about the plot, the details are reserved for the theater's unveiling. What can be said is that this is experimental theater, this is a story of women, and this is a story for everyone to witness women.
