A Celebration of Malaysia’s Shared Cultural Heritage

GENGGAMAN is a joyous and richly textured celebration of Malaysia’s multicultural dance heritage, bringing together the artistic strengths of three of the nation’s leading dance companies — Sutra Foundation, Dua Space Dance Theatre and DiDance — in one powerful shared artistic vision.

Jointly choreographed by artistic directors Datuk Ramli Ibrahim of Sutra Foundation, Anthony Meh and Aman Yap of Dua Space Dance Theatre, and Zaridah Mallik of DiDance, GENGGAMAN brings together some of Malaysia’s finest dancers in a production that traverses tradition, contemporary creativity and the many cultural identities that make Malaysia unique.

Premiering across Klang, Kuala Lumpur and Seremban, with more destinations to follow, GENGGAMAN weaves together diverse dance traditions while respecting the essential authenticity, character and authority of each form. Yet, rather than merely placing traditions side by side, it seeks to discover the creative connections between them — revealing how difference can become a source of dialogue, understanding and shared joy.

More than a dance production, GENGGAMAN aspires to be a cultural statement for our times. It affirms that Malaysia’s greatest strength does not lie in the uniformity of its cultures, but in the harmonious coexistence of traditions that remain deeply rooted while continuing to evolve.

Through dance, music and artistic collaboration, the production celebrates universal values of respect, unity and the joy of living together. It also reminds us that the true measure of a society is not simply its material progress, but how deeply it values its arts, nurtures its cultural heritage and creates opportunities for people to imagine, create and flourish together.

Each participating company brings its own distinctive artistic voice. DiDance, under Zaridah Mallik, brings a fresh contemporary energy to Malay traditional and popular dance, challenging convention while remaining grounded in its cultural roots. Dua Space Dance Theatre, led by Anthony Meh and Aman Yap, has developed a distinctive Malaysian contemporary vocabulary drawing from Chinese ethnic dance forms, Malaysian landscapes, music and lived experience. Sutra Foundation, under Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, has given Indian classical dance in Malaysia an internationally recognised presence, combining the dynamism of contemporary creativity with the discipline and authenticity of classical tradition.

GENGGAMAN will also feature a special lecture-demonstration, “Behind the Making of GENGGAMAN,” offering audiences an intimate insight into the creative processes, challenges and discoveries behind this unprecedented collaboration, conducted by the three artistic directors themselves.

GENGGAMAN marks the beginning of what promises to be one of Malaysia’s most significant collaborative dance ventures — a celebration of our living cultural heritage and a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when we hold our differences together.
