About
Crossing Borders in Bharatanatyam is an evening of Bharatanatyam repertoire performed by Imran Syafiq and Nadhirah Rahmat. Presented as a continuous 60- to 75-minute performance without intermission, the programme brings together nritta (pure dance), abhinaya (expressive interpretation), and narrative works drawn from the Bharatanatyam tradition.
As non-Indian Malaysian practitioners, Imran and Nadhirah have continued to practise and perform Bharatanatyam through years of disciplined training. The production reflects their commitment to developing their technique, musicality, expression, and understanding of the form while creating more opportunities to present Bharatanatyam on stage.
Crossing Borders in Bharatanatyam considers how a traditional art form can be practised across communities while maintaining respect for its lineage. Through continued learning, mentorship, and performance, the dancers present Bharatanatyam as a living tradition that can connect practitioners and audiences across cultural backgrounds.
