Preface:
The "Classical Composers' Chronoporter" series is a carefully crafted production by Perpetual Arts, inspired by renowned composers from the Western classical music world. Their fascinating lives are brought to the stage through theatrical performances.
Following the enthusiastic response to our inaugural production in 2024, this year we return with a brand-new musical based on the life and works of German composer Johannes Brahms. Through his story and music, we are proud to present a rare musical theatre experience right here in Johor Bahru!

Performance Introduction:
This production invites you to step into the dramatic and emotional life of Johannes Brahms:
From the humble yet warm overture of his childhood in 1833, to the worldly movements of his youth amidst the glitz and glamour; from his silent love for Clara Schumann, the wife of his mentor, to the deep introspection and inner struggles that shaped his soul. It was through this intertwining of love and loss, light and shadow, that Brahms found his creative fuel—transforming life’s turmoil into timeless masterpieces.
The stage play is structured in four acts, symbolizing the four movements of a classical symphony. Each act represents a pivotal chapter in Brahms' life.
Movement I · Prelude: A Warm Beginning
The care of his parents and the laughter shared with childhood friends introduced him to the warmth of love and the innocence of friendship—laying the emotional foundation for his future artistic creations.
Movement II · Scherzo: The Clamor of the World
At seventeen, he captivated worldly audiences with his masterful piano skills, performing for bar patrons in noisy taverns. Yet beneath the applause, he endured the bitterness brought by flirtatious courtesans and the oppression of the elite. It wasn't until the arrival of his mentor Joseph Joachim and the Schumann couple that his destiny began to change.
Movement III · Rondo: The Journey of Self-Discovery
Caught between the tides of changing musical styles and his deep yet forbidden feelings for his mentor’s wife, Clara, Brahms faced intense inner conflict and emotional turmoil. These struggles created powerful dramatic tension and striking contrasts, ultimately shaping his breakthrough and the forging of a truly unique artistic identity.
Movement IV · Finale: Echoes of the Soul
With the clarity that comes in midlife, fame and fortune gradually fade into the background—leaving only the search for inner peace and self-awareness as his true destination.
Throughout the performance, several of Brahms’ most iconic works—including Hungarian Dance No. 5, Piano Quintet No. 1, Lullaby, and Intermezzo, Op. 118 No. 2—will be performed live by the cast or musicians. This seamless blend of theatre and music offers more than melodies; it brings you the unspoken voice of the soul.
