Layar Lara (1997) drops you onto a film set spiraling out of control — and turns the camera on the people making the movie, not the one they're shooting.

Ena Manjalara is the young star everyone loves to resent: talented, difficult, unprepared for what this shoot is about to teach her. Clashes with her exacting director Malik and steady production assistant Daud crack her ego open, letting something more honest show through.

The real gut-punch is Auntie Zai — once one of Malaysian cinema's brightest stars, now drifting through the story losing her grip on memory and self, a ghost of the golden age haunting the industry that made her and has since moved on.

Director Shuhaimi Baba uses this movie-within-a-movie to ask what the film industry owes those who give everything to it. Equal parts backstage drama and elegy for Malay cinema's classic era, it's a story about fame's cruelty, mentorship's quiet power, and what's left once the spotlight moves on.
