Workshop description:

This workshop offers a fun introduction to the art of Borneo beadloom, making it suitable for beginners and anyone curious to explore beadwork inspired by Sabahan heritage. Participants will learn the basic techniques of beadloom weaving while discovering the beautiful Borneo motifs. Using colourful beads and simple tools, each participant will create a meaningful beaded piece and gain a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Sabah and how traditional designs can be re-imagined for today. By the end of the session, everyone will leave with a handcrafted piece that reflects their own creativity.

All-inclusive materials:

Everything required for the workshop is provided. Hands-on guidance: Step-by-step instruction with individual support throughout the session, making it suitable for beginners and those trying beadlooms for the first time.

Take-home artwork:

Each participant leaves with their hand-made creation.

About the instructor:

Joan (ArtBead) is a Sabahan crafter based in Kuala Lumpur who specializes in handcrafted, Borneo-inspired beaded accessories. Her designs that are focused on Bornean heritage with modern expression have brought together people from all walks of life who want to try their hand at creating their own beaded pieces. Her custom pieces have also been commissioned as press gifts for the cast of AVATAR: Fire and Ash, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver & Oona Chaplin.
