🌕 Debut Concert | Radiance Across the Strait
Mid-Autumn Concert & “Moon Calling” Art Exhibition
There are plenty of ways to celebrate Mid-Autumn.
Here’s one where you can listen, wander, and even bring home a little surprise.
On 19 September 2026, the R&F Princess Cove Opera House Chinese Orchestra presents its debut concert, joined by internationally acclaimed Malaysian pianist Claudia Yang and local visual artist Chen Min Suen.
For one evening, the opera house becomes more than a concert venue.
Wander through the exhibition before taking your seat, then follow the music into the theatre, where sound, art and the moon come together in one shared experience.
🌟 Listen. This is what Johor Bahru sounds like.
Internationally acclaimed pianist Claudia Yang returns home.
Now based in Beijing and having performed for heads of state around the world, she joins the orchestra for the first time in a stirring performance of the “Youth” Piano Concerto.
Just as Johor Bahru is shaped by many cultures, this collaboration brings together the piano and Chinese orchestra in a musical conversation, where different traditions meet, listen and respond to one another.
🌕 After all, this is where I’d come home to.
Running from 14–19 September, the Moon Calling Art Exhibition transforms the opera house lobby into a space to slow down and look up.
Curated by artist Chen Min Suen, the exhibition brings together paintings and installations that reflect on memory, belonging and the many meanings we attach to the moon.
If you’re joining us on 19 September, which is the concert night, come a little earlier.
Take your time with the exhibition, snap a few photos, and don’t forget to collect your exclusive keepsake before heading into the theatre.
🎼 A city, heard in many ways.
“If this is our first concert, we’d like it to sound like the city we call home.”
In 60 minutes, the programme journeys through the many influences that shape Johor Bahru today.
The evening opens with the festive Celebration, followed by the world premiere of Princess R&F, a newly commissioned work by our Malaysian in-house composer Simon Kong Su Leong. The programme also features The Riverof Time by German composer Robert Zollitsch (Lao Luo), alongside two celebrated concerto works: Yanzi (Smoky Grace) for yangqin and chamber orchestra, performed by Tan Jie Qing, and Lanting (Orchid Pavilion) for guzheng and chamber orchestra, performed by Cloud Teo.
Across familiar classics, contemporary works and a world premiere, the programme traces the many voices that make up Johor Bahru, and looking towards what comes next.
