The City That Remembers and Learns: Shaping Future Cities by Prof Ir Rosdiadee Nordin (Future Cities Research Institute)
This sharing explores how cities are moving from static and passive built environments into intelligent living systems that remember, learn and adapt. Through the lens of the Future Cities Research Institute (FCRI), Sunway University, the talk connects the memory of past cities with today’s AI-enabled urban technologies, including digital twins, net-zero buildings and smart infrastructure. It will also imagine future possibilities such as autonomous drones and AI-native networks, while reflecting on talent, ethics, social responsibility and how we can keep future cities deeply human
2:45pm – 3.30pm
Empire in the Cloud: Colonial Logics in the Digital Tech Stack by Elina Noor
Malaysia is becoming a key hub for digital infrastructure, data, and AI development. But beneath the buzz of growth and innovation, a closer look reveals that today’s digital expansion reproduces older patterns of dependence and extraction. From 19th century telegraph cables to AI systems, the same questions endure: Who controls critical infrastructure? Whose labour underpins tech advances? What costs of ‘progress’ are hidden? Whose knowledge is prioritised or excluded? For Malaysia, these are not abstract concerns; rather, they are central to the nation’s autonomy, dignity, and resilience.
3:35pm – 4.30pm
Memory, Technology & The Making of Us by Jac sm Kee
Technology has always accompanied how we record what we feel, know & explore. But embedded within that are invisible layers of inclusion, exclusion, imagination & sometimes even violence. With AI being a catchall phrase for the contemporary technological paradigm towards where we are meant to be - feminist tech activist & community archivist Jac sm Kee invites an unpeeling of these layers to locate how we might want to engage in this journey.
