Resonance Across Oceans: The Soai Saxophone Ensemble Brings the Magic of Osaka to Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur, June 2026 – The air in the UCSI Recital Hall is set to transform into a tapestry of rich, brassy textures and delicate woodwind melodies as the world-renowned Soai Saxophone Ensemble arrives from Osaka, Japan, for a one-of-a-kind musical showcase.
A Symphony of Saxophones with workshop
On Friday, 5 June 2026, audiences will witness a rare "orchestra of 23 saxophones." Moving beyond the instrument's traditional jazz roots, this massive ensemble demonstrates the saxophone’s incredible versatility. Led by the distinguished Conductor Masahiro Maeda, the ensemble promises a performance that is as visually striking as it is sonically profound.
From Classical Grandeur to Ghibli’s Magic
The program, titled "Special Concert in KL," is a carefully curated journey through timeless melodies. The repertoire bridges the gap between Eastern and Western traditions, featuring:
Ravel’s Boléro: A rhythmic tour de force that will highlight the ensemble's precision and building intensity.
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (1st mov.): Bringing the pastoral beauty of the German countryside to life through a unique arrangement.
Mozart’s Andante for Flute K. 315: Featuring the exquisite artistry of Keiko Nakagawa on flute solo.
The Studio Ghibli Medley: An exclusive 20-minute journey through the nostalgic, whimsical soundtracks of Joe Hisaishi, celebrating Japan’s iconic animation legacy.
A Homecoming of Sorts
The event holds a special significance for the Malaysian musical community. Flute soloist Keiko Nakagawa is not only a distinguished graduate of Soai Universityan institution with a tradition of excellence dating back to 1888—but also a former principal flutist of the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia. Her return to the stage in Kuala Lumpur signifies a beautiful full-circle moment of international cultural exchange.
Education and Artistry
In addition to the main performance, the morning will feature a short workshop with selected ensembles. This initiative reflects the mission of Soai University and UCSI to foster a "long-standing tradition of excellence" in music education, providing local students and enthusiasts with a rare opportunity to learn from Japanese masters.
