About
Sounds of the City at UAB: glitch/fractal is an experimental solo lecture-performance that explores the intersection of creation and destruction in contemporary music. Centred on a 40-minute composition for snare drum and electronics, the project uses sampling, acoustic filtering and live electronics to create an ever-evolving soundscape. Inspired by Fred Moten’s notion that 'the conjunction of reproduction and disappearance is performance’s condition of possibility', the piece challenges traditional approaches to music-making and invites audiences to experience sound in a fresh, immersive manner.
- 15-minute pre-performance talk
- 40-minute performance
- 15-minute post-performance discussion
By merging traditional instruments with electronics, the project demonstrates how technology can transform sound, space and perception. The lecture-performance format fosters a deeper understanding of and appreciation for contemporary music-making. This collaboration broadens the artistic programming and offers the community a rare opportunity to engage with cutting-edge compositional ideas and experimental sonic experiences.
Sounds of the City is a collaboration between Think City and Rondo, and through this series, we will be presenting a series of recitals set to take place at U.A.B. Building, George Town.
This project is part of our 2025 Season Open Call, which supports passionate artists in bringing their creative ideas to life.
