About
Once an important part of settlements and urban formation, rivers and its communities have slowly faded into the background. Many of such riverine settlements have been enclosed and encroached by developments, becoming islands in the city, where they remain tenuously connected, yet separate from, each other and their broader urban environs.
Taking a look at two kampungs along the Klang riverside – Kampung Pasir Baru and Taman Hock Ann, each located on the West and East banks of the Klang River respectively – A Tale of Two Kampungs cultural mapping explores the different ways these kampungs and their environs have been represented, and to begin understanding how human–river relationships have emerged, and how they could yet be imagined otherwise and transformed. Phase 1 of the research exhibition looks from the top-down, through maps, research, and official plans. The exhibition becomes the foundation for further research in phase 2 with oral histories and word-of-mouth documentations with the local residents, and exploring further what it means to be a kampung amidst urbanisation, ecological transformation, and the archives of utopian dreams.
Everyone is welcome to visit this free and open exhibition at any time during the advertised festival period (26.09 - 5.10)!
