Set in the historic town of Papan, the opera tells the heroic story of Sybil Kathigasu (born Sybil Medan Daly) and her husband, who bravely aided the Malayan resistance during WWII. Despite torture and imprisonment by the Japanese, Sybil’s courage and sacrifice shine through.

Sybil was awarded the King George Medal for Gallantry months before she succumbed to her wounds in June 1948, making her the only Malayan woman to have received this distinction.

With a libretto by Chin San Sooi and music by Lam Siu Chong, “Solace of Papan” is a powerful journey of hope and resilience.

Synopsis

"Solace of Papan" Opera transports audiences to the tumultuous era of World War II in British Malaya, where the resilient spirit of Sybil Kathigasu shines amidst the darkness of war and oppression. The opera unfolds against the backdrop of the once-thriving tin mining town of Papan, where Sybil, alongside her husband Dr. Abdon Clement Kathigasu, runs a medical clinic.

As the Japanese Occupation grips the nation, Sybil's unwavering courage and defiance against her interrogators become legendary. Despite facing torture and imprisonment, Sybil remains steadfast in her refusal to betray her fellow countrymen and the anti-Japanese resistance. Her faith in God and unwavering resolve sustain her through the darkest of times.
