Emma is a caring, charismatic, and quick-witted young woman with a fondness for romantic stories, though she feels she is above them. At the age of 20, living with her elderly father, she feels lonely after her governess marries and moves away. Their only regular company is a loyal family friend, Mr Knightley. By chance, Emma meets a student, Harriet, and becomes passionate about playing matchmaker for her. Her plans are complicated with the arrival of other interesting visitors to their area, each with their own secrets and agendas. Misunderstandings lead to some awkward moments and lessons learnt, and finally to realisations of where everyone’s true love lies.

 

《爱玛》（Emma）是英国作家简·奥斯汀（Jane Austen）创作的一部长篇小说，被英国文艺批评家凯特尔博士（Dr．Kettle）誉为是奥斯汀生平所写过的“最伟大最具有代表性的作品”。虽然《爱玛》在中国读者中的影响不如《傲慢与偏见》那样大，但它被一些评论家认为是奥斯汀在艺术手法上最成熟的作品。而且，在20世纪80年代，评论界还有一种趋势，把《爱玛》看作是“超越时空和作者的一个自足的文本，可以不管时代背景和永远也无法知晓的简·奥斯汀的观点，而仅仅根据作品本身来对待”。

2006年，由词曲作家保罗·戈登创作的音乐剧《爱玛》首次上演。这部广受好评的音乐剧，在保留原作语言完整性的基础上，重新演绎了奥斯汀的经典之作，吸引现代观众再次爱上奥斯汀最受喜爱的角色之一“爱玛”。
