Ever wanted to try acting but didn’t know where to start? Maybe you’ve started acting but feel stuck at a plateau? The Actor’s Toolkit is a hands-on, practical programme that explores the tools and methodologies used by professionals to develop and perform the characters you see in the theatre and on screen.
You’ll gain practical techniques you can take straight into the rehearsal room, auditions and performance. You’ll build a solid technical foundation, sharpen your instincts and receive honest, constructive feedback, all within a high-energy ensemble where taking risks is encouraged and laughter is very much part of the process. No previous acting experience is required, and the work is pitched to challenge beginners and experienced performers alike.
Led by theatre director Andy Cranshaw, the 12 sessions cover the fundamentals of acting through practical exercises, theatre games, improvisation, voice work, movement and character development, drawing on classical technique and the work of practitioners such as Lee Strasberg and Augusto Boal. You’ll discover how actors use their lived experience, observation, imagination, listening and presence to bring characters to life from the inside out, while honing your performance skills.
Towards the end of the course we shall start to work with scripts and the course culminates in an informal showcase performance where participants will present their work in progress to an invited audience of family and friends.
More than simply learning how to act, this course celebrates creativity, connection and the confidence that comes from trying something new. It is an opportunity to make new friends, share stories, challenge yourself and experience the unique excitement of live theatre.
