Film Talk: Capturing the Memories of Aulong Lama

To inspire more people to document the stories of their hometowns, we are honored to have Taiping-born writer Uthaya Sankar SB with us to share his experience in capturing his hometown’s story.

In 2024, after attending the 1st Raintown Film Festival, Uthaya Sankar SB decided to return to his hometown, Lorong B Aulong Lama (Taiping), where he spent his childhood, to document precious memories from the 1970s-1990s. Through interviews with past and present residents, his documentary seeks to preserve and share the nearly forgotten stories and collective historical memories of life in that era.

In this session, the documentary Kenangan Di Lorong B Aulong Lama, directed by Uthaya, will have its premiere, followed by an insightful sharing session with the director. We hope to highlight that storytelling is not just about technical skills but also about intention and purpose. Coming from a non-film background, Uthaya Sankar SB’s journey emphasizes the power of storytelling over technical expertise. We hope this session will inspire you, now it’s your turn to capture your own story!

SYNOPSIS of KENANGAN DI LORONG B AULONG LAMA:
A group of people who are still the residents at Lorong B, Aulong Lama, Taiping, or those who spent their childhood there, share their memories from the 1970s to 1990s. Intertwined with nostalgia, childhood experiences, kampung hardship, bondings, laughter, sadness, hopes, and challenges, their candid sharing forms a collective experience worth knowing and documenting before everything is lost forever.
