Wayne Lau Tsan Wai is a baritone, music educator, songwriter, and choral conductor from Sabah. He holds a Diploma in Music Studies (Vocal Major, Violin Minor) from Sabah Institute of Art, under the tutelage of Adsone Matthew Gabu with Best Academic Achievement & Most Promising Students Awards along with a Certificate in Christian Worship from Singapore Methodist School of Music.
Wayne started his singing journey at the age of 8 as a choir boy in a children choir under BCCM KK Church. At the age of 15, he became committed to a vocal lesson with Pastor Alvin Lee Kah Haw. Wayne was also the Assistant Conductor and chorister of the BCCM KK Hakka Service Choir, a chorister of BCCM Voice of Praise Choir and Sabah Christian Festival Chorale Association (2015 - 2023). He has participated in numerous ICCCS church music conferences also has been frequently appointed as a vocal soloist in church. He is passionate about Korean art songs and actively explores Korean vocal literature. Besides vocal music, Wayne was also a part of an orchestra as a violinist in Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra (2020).
During the pandemic, Wayne performed the "Champagne Song" from Die Fledermaus in a Quarantine Opera Online Performance (2021, Worldwide). His operatic debut was as King Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors staged in 2024 at Ipoh. In 2025, he performed as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte staged in Sitiawan. Beside opera, he also performed in Musical Theatre Evita as a part of the ensemble in 2022 at KLPAC.
Wayne was active in joining competitions. He has won multiple awards, including 1st Class Award– "Let the praise fill this land" BCCM Sacred Music Voice Competition (2012), Finalist- "His Music Feast" Sabah Worship Music Composition Competition (2019), 2nd Class Award – Hong Kong Int’l Vocal Open Competition (2020), Silver – KL City Opera Opera KUL (2021), Preliminary Silver – Gold Star Int’l Music Comp. (2023), Finalist – Medici International Music Competition, London Classical Music Competition, Beethoven Int’l Music Competition (Austria), Seil Korea Art Song Competiton (South Korea)
Wayne continues to share his passion for opera, choral conducting, and music education, contributing to Malaysia’s classical music scene.
