Dido & Aeneas (Purcell)

True love runs far from smooth in this gripping story of Henry Purcell’s famous opera. It tells the tale of Dido, the queen of Carthage, who is won over and falls in love with Aeneas, the Trojan hero. But sorcery and fateful spells are at play and their story does not end there! There is anguish, betrayal and suffering as Aeneas is tricked into believing that the Gods require him to leave Carthage immediately to fulfill his destiny. Can he bear to be parted from his beloved Dido?
 
Audiences can escape into an exquisite world of music and experience one of the most beautiful arias in Baroque opera – the aria to complete this story – “When I am Laid in Earth”.
 
Featuring Sharlene Rani as Dido, James Long as Aeneas and Chew Shi Yun as Belinda, come and see Dido and Aeneas, the masterpiece of English Baroque opera. Staged at The Gardens Theater on the 24th of June 2023.
