About
Open your hearts to a moving choral experience by the Joyful Choir of the Blind, Golden Hearts Choir and Persatuan Hearts Symphony string ensemble under the baton of Frederick Chaw.
A project led by Wong Siew Ngan who is also the choir’s advisor, “Joyful Choir of the Blind: Life in Echoes” is not just an ordinary choral concert. From children to seniors, blind persons to non-blind persons, each voice and artist on stage carries a story. Their singing is more than mere melody, but a source of spiritual strength and a testament of a life lived. As their music fill the theatre, it will stir something in you.
The Joyful Choir of the Blind is not a new ensemble. For the past 18 years, senior citizens who are blind or have low vision have been gathering at the Malaysian Association for the Blind to showcase themselves through music. This time, they are joined by the Golden Hearts Choir made up of the senior citizens from Rumah Charis as well as young musicians from the Hearts Symphony.
“Joyful Choir of the Blind: Life in Echoes” shows that we are not alone in this journey. We are all very much connected just like the voices reverberating between the stage and the audience and the stories that echo from heart to heart. Hopefully, it will continue to resonate long after the final note ends.
The proceeds from this one-night fundraising concert presented by Persatuan Hearts Symphony and klpac, with the support of Yayasan Sime Darby, will go towards sustaining the Joyful Choir of the Blind and its musical activities for blind persons.
Licensed by MACP and piano sponsored by Olala Music Centre.

About the Joyful Choir of the Blind
Formed in 2008 under the Malaysian Association for the Blind’s senior citizens’ group, the Joyful Choir of the Blind aims to nurture passion and talent for singing among the blind, foster friendship and team spirit, and bring encouragement and joy to the community. Based in Kuala Lumpur, the choir currently comprises 29 members, including 12 sighted volunteers.
The choir is conducted by Mr. Frederick Chaw, with Ms. Leong Moon Ee serving as its accompanist and Ms. Wong Siew Ngan as its Music Advisor.
Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the Senior Citizens’ Centre of the Malaysian Association for the Blind in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.
Though the choir initially faced numerous obstacles since the blind individuals could not read standard musical scores, they have overcome these challenges through their tireless efforts along with the guidance from their instructors. To date, the members have mastered over 100 choral songs in Mandarin, various dialects and several foreign languages. Singing with the choir has now become a source of great joy in the members’ lives.
In 2012, the Joyful Choir of the Blind released a CD entitled Songs of Hope, a testament to the belief that visual impairment is not a barrier and with dedicated training, blind individuals can achieve excellence in music.
Over the past 18 years, the choir has been featured in countless performances including national choral exchange events, a joint performance with the New Start Asia Youth Orchestra, participation in a concert in Singapore at the invitation of the Hua Xing Choir, and numerous festive performances at the invitation of various organisations.
United by a deep passion for music and supported by their instructors, the members of the Joyful Choir of the Blind continue to forge ahead with courage and determination along a vast and beautiful musical path.
