Workshop description:This workshop focuses primarily on being a low barrier of entry to creativity through the art of embroidery weaving. Designed for participants of all skill levels, the session introduces the basic techniques of weaving in a way that is approachable, enjoyable and encourages personal expression. Participants will use colourful textile materials to create their own woven piece while learning how weaving can be a symbol of culture, heritage and artistic expression. The aim is to make art more inclusive, and spark curiosity about the rich cultures of East Malaysia. By the end of the session, each participant will leave with a colourful handmade piece that reflects their own creativity and a renewed appreciation for the process of making art.What you’ll get from this workshop:
All-inclusive materials: Everything required for the workshop is provided, including all textile materials and tools. Participants simply arrive ready to create.
Hands-on guidance: Step-by-step instruction with individual support throughout the session, making it suitable for beginners and those trying weaving for the first time.
Take-home artwork: Each participant leaves with a completed woven piece in their own style, as well as the confidence and curiosity to continue making art beyond the workshop.
About the instructor:
Allie Jabing is an Iban-Chinese creative whose background is mainly in fashion. Through her love of all things creative, she has been able to take on other creative ventures such as art installation work, hosting creative workshops, as well as being active in the pop-up booth scene in both East and West Malaysia. She explores themes of cultural identity, social activism, and the journey of becoming in her work.
