About
About
Experience classical music in motion.
This dynamic programme explores how composers across styles and generations have drawn inspiration from dance, transforming physical movement into powerful musical expression. Though written for listening rather than the dance floor, each work carries a strong rhythmic heartbeat that propels the music forward and brings it vividly to life.
The evening opens with the unmistakable voice of Astor Piazzolla, whose Oblivion and Libertango fuse classical writing with the sensual intensity of Argentine tango. At the heart of the programme is Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, a cornerstone of the repertoire, infused with folk-inspired rhythms and sweeping lyricism.
From there, the energy shifts to the vibrant streets of New York with Leonard Bernstein’s Three Dances from On the Town — music born for the stage, brimming with jazz-inflected rhythm and theatrical flair. The concert concludes with Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, a radiant work rooted in American folk dance, celebrated for its open harmonies and sense of optimism.
Performed by the Tutan Chamber Ensemble under the baton of Conductor Laureate Kevin Field, and featuring solo pianist, Malaysia’s own Shi Yue, this concert offers an engaging journey through music driven by rhythm, gesture, and motion — an evening that is lively, expressive, and deeply human.
Whether you are drawn by familiar favourites or discovering these works anew, An Evening of Dance Music invites you to hear classical music through the lens of movement — where every phrase dances, and every rhythm tells a story.
