About
Welcome! This April, we're excited to have you join us for our workshop on the fundamentals of Contact Improvisation(CI). Contact Improvisation is a form of dance where partners move together by sharing weight and following a physical point of contact, like a rolling back or a resting shoulder, to explore the physics of gravity and momentum.
It is accessible to all backgrounds as it relies on natural physics; if you can lean, breathe, and feel the floor, you can participate, regardless of your age, body type, or previous movement experience.
What you will learn:This 4-week fundamentals will guide you through the essential building blocks of Contact Improvisation, focusing on:
- Weight: Sensing, sharing, distributing, and rolling.
- Falling & Landing: Moving safely into and out of the floor.
- Spine & Pathways: Discovering organic and supported movement pathways.
- Surfaces & Terrains: Embodied understanding on working with different contact surfaces.
There will be 8-class sessions in total with 4 jams on Sundays as an opportunity to integrate one's learning through dancing with others in a continuous uninterrupted open session. Materials will be delivered primarily in English. We can also provide support in Chinese and Malay language.
When and where:
4 weekends in April at Studio 5 and 7 of The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC). Please refer to the schedule below for timing details. (Unfortunately Studio 5 and 7 of KLPAC are not accessible via wheelchair).
This is for you if you are:
- interested in expanding your dance and movement vocabulary
- looking to expand your improvisation range
- curious about movement or dance and looking for an accessible form.
Who will you be learning from?
- Ren Xin is a body and dance practitioner interested in how embodied practice supports shifts in daily life. For her, contact improvisation provides a space to encounter patterns in the body and practice new pathways for being with oneself and others.
- Chloe Tan is a movement artist trained in both dance and dance movement therapy. Anchored in curiosity and embodied listening, her practice engages movement as a way of sensing, relating, and inquiring.
- Alisya is a dancer based in KL. She is interested in discovering efficiency of movement and the performance possibilities of contact improvisation.
- Azri has been practicing CI for over 2 years and trained in CI-focused residencies in Chiang Dao, Thailand, and Goa, India. Azri's curiosity with CI centers on sensing and letting things emerge at the intersections of movements and other media.
Background on KongCI:
- KongCI founder Choo Tee Kuang (since Feb 2024) - has been creating a space for the community through Contact Improvisation workshops, self-practice sessions and performance. Regularly inviting artists from different regions to host and share their experiences, talents, and perspectives on the practice and philosophy of CI. Now they continue the journey to share more through workshops.
- Loke Soh Kim: Contact Improvisation, for me, is not just a skill; it is about balance, understanding, and give and take.
- KongCI facilitators Team: Choo Tee Kuang, Loke Soh Kim, Lee Ren Xin, Azri , Chloe.
