L'invitation au Voyage (A French Song Recital)

L’Invitation au Voyage (A French Song Recital) invites audiences into the refined and expressive world of French mélodie and opera. Performed by tenor Yap Jin Hin and soprano Jane Soong, and Kenneth Teh on the piano, the programme celebrates the intimate connection between poetry and music, exploring themes of love, longing, memory, and spiritual companionship.

Through the elegant lyricism of composers such as Gabriel Fauré and Henri Duparc, the concert traces the emotional nuances of human relationships—from tender devotion to passionate yearning. The distinctive voices of Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc add colour, atmosphere, and wit, while the graceful charm of Reynaldo Hahn and the rich romanticism of Ernest Chausson highlight the beauty of musical dialogue between two voices.

Moving between the intimacy of the salon and the drama of the operatic stage, this recital reflects both artistic partnership and personal connection. It offers an evening of poetic elegance, emotional depth, and shared storytelling—celebrating music as a language of love and unity.

A Doctor of Musical Arts graduate from Louisiana State University and a protégé of the noted American tenor, Robert Grayson, Dr. Yap Jin Hin has appeared in leading roles with a number of opera companies in the United States. Among his performances are Anatol in Vanessa with the Nevada Opera; Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville; Tamino in The Magic Flute with both Opera Louisiane and the Acadiana Symphony. In 2012 he performed Rodolfo in La Bohème with Opera in the Ozarks. At the Italian festival La Musica Lirica he sang Alfredo in La Traviata. His wide-ranging repertoire includes performances of Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, the title role in Romeo et Juliet, and the Narrator (Male Chorus) in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia.

Dr. Yap is an active performer. In August 2016, he performed the role of Rodolfo in La Bohème with the Kuala Lumpur City Opera (KLCO). In January 2017, he was invited to perform in Die Zauberflöte with MPO.In June 2017, he performed the role of Tonio in La fille du regiment in Kuala Lumpur and Penang with KLCO. In August 2017, he was invited as the guest soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and Missa Solemnis organized by Yin Qi. In November 2018, he has performed as Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with KLCO. In October 2022, he has performed the role of Don José in Carmen with KLCO. In June 2022, he was invited to perform at the “Grand Night of Opera” with the KLCO Orchestra, and the performance is awarded Best Group Vocal Performance at the 18th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.  In November 2022, he was invited to perform at the inaugural concert of the Morelia Music Festival in Mexico with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra. Last April, he was invited to perform at the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in the concert “Verdi & Puccini at the Mansion”.

Dr. Yap is currently a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts of the Sultan Idris Education University.

叶振兴博士毕业于Louisiana State University音乐艺术博士（Doctor of Musical Arts），师从著名美国男高音Robert Grayson。他曾与美国多家歌剧院合作，担纲多个主要角色。其中包括在Nevada Opera演出歌剧《Vanessa》中的Anatol；在《The Barber of Seville》中饰演Almaviva伯爵；以及分别与Opera Louisiane和Acadiana Symphony Orchestra合作，在《The Magic Flute》中饰演Tamino。2012年，他在Opera in the Ozarks演出《La Bohème》中的Rodolfo；并在意大利音乐节 La Musica Lirica 演唱《La Traviata》中的Alfredo。

In 2003, Jane began her vocal studies under the guidance of Wen Qizhong, a Europe-based musician. In 2006, she was admitted to the University of Malaya to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in Vocal Performance. During her university years, she was actively involved in concerts and competitions both on and off campus, earning numerous awards.

In May 2011, she graduated with distinction from Louisiana State University with a Master of Music degree, majoring in Vocal Performance under the tutelage of Robert Grayson. During her studies, her vocal technique received high praise from several professors.

In the summer of 2012, she was selected as a singer for the Opera in the Ozarks training program, where she performed the role of the First Lady in The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Mrs. Segstrom in A Little Night Music by Stephen Sondheim.

Jane currently serves as a vocal instructor in the Music Department at the University of Malaya and is actively involved in the development of local vocal education and performance. In October 2014, she collaborated with Eat, Sing & Travel People in a production of Carmen, performing the role of Micaëla.

In April 2015, she worked with the Young Choral Academy and conductor Richard Lewis from the Scottish Opera in an opera highlights concert, which received critical acclaim.

In August 2016, she collaborated with Kuala Lumpur City Opera (KLCO) to perform the role of Mimì in La Bohème, earning enthusiastic praise. In June 2017, she reunited with KLCO to perform Marie in La fille du Régiment by Donizetti. In August of the same year, she was invited as the soprano soloist for Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis presented by the Yin Qi Choir.

In May 2022, the Yin Qi Choir once again invited her as a soloist for Haydn’s Nelson Mass. She later collaborated with KLCO in Grand Night of Opera (opera highlights) and performed the role of Micaëla in Carmen.

In November of the same year, she represented Malaysia at the opening performance of the Morelia Music Festival in Mexico, receiving high praise. In April 2023, she participated in The Verismo Masters concert, jointly organized by KLCO and Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in Penang, to great audience acclaim.

In October 2024, she performed the role of Musetta in another production of La Bohème. 

2003 年，宋欣怡师从旅欧音乐家温其忠师门下。2006年，她考入馬来亚大学进修音乐学士学位，主修声乐。大学期间，她活跃于校内外的演唱活动及比赛，并获奖无数。宋欣怡于2011年五月以优异的成绩完成路易斯安那州立大学的音乐硕士学位，师从Robert Grayson主 修 声 乐。学习期间，她的歌唱技巧深获多位教授的赏识。2012年夏天，她被选为Opera in the Ozarks夏日集训课程的歌手，演出了莫扎特的《魔笛》中的第一侍女，以及Stephen Sondheim的《The Little Night Music》中的Mrs. Segstrom。
