“From Plant to Play” is a djembe workshop inviting participants to explore and transform traditional West African rhythms. Rather than copying, rhythms adapt and grow in a new environment, culminating in a unique drum piece shared in a final performance.

About

From Plant to Play.

This is not just a change of words,

but a shift in attitude.

African rhythms travel from distant West Africa to here.

They are not meant to be copied unchanged,

but to adapt, take root, and continue growing on this land.

After all, the sunlight, the air, and the water here are different.

In this workshop,

We invite you to play, explore, and make some noise with the djembe.

Starting from traditional rhythms, we will gradually accumulate and transform them.

Over time, a rhythm will emerge —

a drum piece born from this place, which students will shape into a short repertoire and present as a final musical sharing at the end of the workshop.

Workshop Content:

 • Djembe techniques
 • Ensemble experience
 • West African rhythms
 • mini showcase

Anyone who are interested in rhythm and drumming, no prior music experience needed.

About Chun Wai
About Chun Wai

Also known as WaaiwaiiDrum, Chun Wai is a multitalented young artist — a movement artist, percussionist, street performer, and arts educator.

His artistic journey began with the 24 Festive Drums, a Malaysian drumming tradition rooted in the lunar festival calendar. Since then, he has toured extensively across Asia, Europe, and Australia with various theatrical and performance groups.

Deeply passionate about West African percussion, improvisational dance, and physical and theatrical performance, Chun Wai is currently exploring the theatrical potential of rhythm and the human body.

During Malaysia’s Movement Control Order in 2020, he shifted his focus to improvisational dance. He was twice awarded the Create Now Fund by CENDANA, supporting the creation of two online dance improvisation projects: “Dance! Dance! Dance!” and “Dance! Dance! Dance! 2.0″.

In 2022, drawing from two years of embodied experience during lockdown, he created his solo work “FauveDance”. The piece won multiple awards at the Short+Sweet Malaysia Festival 2021, including Best Male Dancer, Best Choreographer, and the Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Creative Excellence Award.

In 2024, Chun Wai was selected for two prestigious international residencies:
- Kaleidoscope@VI Artist-in-Residence in Singapore (organised by Sigma Collective), focusing on dance creation;
- OneBeat Taiwan, a musical exchange program hosted by Found Sound Nation.
- Chun Wai is currently dedicated to developing his voice as a distinctive and interdisciplinary creator.
