We Got a First Look at Lagenda Puteri Santubong . Here’s How the Sarawak Legend Is Coming to the Stage.

On 22 September, CloudJoi joined the press conference for Lagenda Puteri Santubong at Istana Budaya. Guests were given a glimpse of the upcoming production through a short performance excerpt, followed by a conversation with the creative team about bringing this Sarawakian legend to the national stage.

The excerpt offered an early look at the show’s movement-led storytelling. Bob Yusof’s voice stood out, too—a fitting introduction to his role as the production’s storyteller and singer.

A familiar legend, told through dance

The story of Puteri Santubong and Puteri Sejinjang has been passed down through generations. This production, presented by Lang Budaya and directed by Dayang Mariana Abang Bolhassan, brings it to the stage through dance, music and theatrical storytelling. At its heart is the relationship between the two sisters, shaped by love, rivalry, conflict and reconciliation.

At the press conference, Dayang Mariana and fellow speakers discussed what it takes to reimagine a traditional story for today’s audiences. The conversation also brought together Bob Yusof, music director Shamsul Zain, Istana Budaya production director Hanida Binti Mohamed Yusof, and technical director Tan Eng Heng, with perspectives spanning performance, music and the work behind the scenes.

A big cast, and a new generation on stage

Around 100 performers are involved, bringing together people of different ages and backgrounds. Among them are young performers aged 6 to 16, selected through auditions, who will share the stage with more experienced artists.

The production will also feature an original score, with musical direction by Shamsul Zain and music created with a team of collaborating composers. Bob Yusof will guide audiences through the story as both storyteller and singer, connecting the narrative with the dancers and music.

For audiences who grew up with the legend—and those hearing it for the first time—Lagenda Puteri Santubong offers a chance to see how the story takes shape in a live performance.
