Celebrating 20 Years of Malaysian Performing Arts Excellence!

Published on 12/05/2025

Petaling Jaya, 4 May 2025 – CloudJoi was honoured to join BOH Plantations and Kakiseni for the 20th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards (20BCAA) at Stage 1 Theatre, PJPAC in Petaling Jaya. This landmark ceremony marked two decades of championing local talent in theatre, dance, music and musical theatre. Fittingly, the event carried the theme “20 Years of Legacy: Igniting Inspiration for Tomorrow” – a reminder that the lessons of the past fuel the creativity of the future.

Over the years, the Cameronians (“Cammies”) have recognised hundreds of artists. In 2025 alone, a record 77 submissions were evaluated across 38 categories spanning dance, music, musical theatre and theatre. CloudJoi is proud to stand alongside BOH and Kakiseni in celebrating this rich creative ecosystem.

✨ Highlights of the 20th Awards

The evening honoured outstanding productions and performances. Notable winners included:

  • Randai “MacBeth” (Pusat Seni Pentas Tradisional, ASWARA): This bold Minangkabau reimagining of Shakespeare swept the theatre category with eight awards. It won Best Director (Dr. Norzizi Zulkifli), Best Actor in a Leading Role (Che Kem) and Supporting Role (Juhara Ayob), Best Ensemble Performance.
  • Samskara – Past Reflections, Present Expressions (GSD Performing Studio): Choreographed and performed by Geetha Shankaran-Lam, this contemporary Bharatanatyam piece earned Geetha the award for Best Featured/Lead Performer in Dance.
  • Teater Muzikal Sakti Merong Mahawangsa (Persatuan Alumni ASWARA): This original Malay musical theatre production captured four awards. It was praised for its rich design and storytelling, winning Best Costume Design, Best Lighting, Best Original Book, and Best Choreographer. These wins underscore the high calibre of Malaysia’s musical theatre creators.
  • “Best of 2024” Honourees: Randai “MacBeth”, Spice, Magic and Mystique (a choral work by The Young KL Singers), and Teater Persiapan Seorang Aktor (Studio Sedar Ruang).

✨ Honouring a Lifetime of Artistic Dedication

A special highlight was the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to Professor Dr Tan Sooi Beng (USM). Prof Tan is a pioneering scholar-activist in ethnomusicology and theatre. As Kakiseni notes, she has “dedicated her life to the study and revitalisation of traditional and contemporary performing arts in Malaysia”.

Her decades of teaching and community work have inspired generations of artists and enriched the nation’s cultural heritage. The Cammies recognised Prof Tan’s immeasurable contributions with its highest honour, celebrating an icon whose legacy will guide Malaysian arts “towards the future”.

✨ CloudJoi’s Commitment to the Arts

Being part of this 20-year milestone is both a privilege and a promise. We have seen how the Cameronians have helped emerging talents become tomorrow’s stars, and how devoted audiences have grown. As Malaysia’s leading digital platform for performing-arts ticketing and streaming, CloudJoi is committed to fuelling this ecosystem. We stand proudly with BOH Plantations, Kakiseni and other supporters in celebrating our past achievements and nurturing future growth.

Congratulations to all the winners, nominees and organisers of the 20th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards. CloudJoi salutes the 20-year legacy of excellence in Malaysian performing arts, and we look forward to many more years of inspiration on stage and screen.
